Teaching Hack

Do you have multiple things you turn on each day? How I waited so long to decide this was an important classroom budget purchase is beyond me. I currently use these remote-controlled outlet plugs. There are 3 in the pack. It's quick and easy, which is perfect for getting the room ready in the morning and closing down the room at the end of the day. You could also pick a student in your first and last hour to be in charge of the remote.

This FREE resource from An Educator's Toolbox is a great activity for your Family and Consumer Science Classroom. I always start my semester-long courses with a unit on communication and leadership skills. To end the week, I use this activity. It's a print-and-go activity, which I love! I am always pleased to see how much it sparks discussion among the 8 " job candidates" and their reasoning why they would or would not hire each. So far, I've yet to have a group choose the correct answer. Check it out if you haven't used it in your room already. It would work great with any unit on job skills but also could fit in nicely if you had a random day and needed an engaging activity. My classes are 49 minutes and it fills the entire class as we discuss the results at the end.

Final thoughts

One thing I've convinced my students of is that my class is THE most important class in the building. They also know not to share that with their other teachers because they might get feisty about it. 😂 It's true though (at least in my opinion) because we are teaching life skills they can implement in their daily life on that specific day. I used this same tactic when I taught elementary that I always had THE best class in that particular grade. Why? I believe it empowers them to realize they are important, worthy, enough, and capable of anything. I believe it too.

I'd love to know what is something you always say in your classroom to empower your students.

Hey there, Reader, This week on the blog, you can read about the kitchen renovation that happened last summer. It was a "Fixer to Fabulous" reveal, but not without some "Love It or List It" moments wondering if it could actually look better AND be finished before students would arrive in August. It's crazy how much can happen in a year, which is why I thought this was the perfect time to write about it. It's almost time for the April ballot. It was the April ballot last year that included a...
